ABOUT THE SIBANYE RUSTENBURG MINE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST(SRMCDT)

The Sibanye Rustenburg Mine Community Development Trust (SRMCDT), formerly known as The Rustenburg Mine Community Development Trust (SRMCDT) was set up in 2016 by Sibanye-Stillwater Rustenburg Platinum Mine.
The Trust decided to change its name from Rustenburg Mine Community Development Trust to Sibanye Rustenburg Mine Community Development Trust (SRMCDT). The name change came about:
• To ensure that we are different in name from other local Trusts to avoid communities confusing the SRMCDT with other community Trusts that are active in the Rustenburg area.
• To follow the South African Revenue Service’s (SARS) requirements in terms of the Trust’s application for Income and Tax Exemption and
• To improve the Trust’s Day to day administrative activities and duties so that it becomes more efficient in rendering services to our communities especially those communities that are on the mine’s doorstep.

OUR OPERATING MODEL-HOW DOES THE TRUST OPERATE?

The Trust was set up as a BBBEE vehicle through which Black people can benefit. The Trust functions through an Operating Model that guides the Trustees on how to manage the Trust, to simplify it and run it in a transparent manner to the benefit of its beneficiaries. Trustees are expected to follow this operating model policy and implement it to the latter. This policy was developed to empower specifically Black persons and communities that live close to the mine.
As an NPO and PBO, the Trust is a humane and charitable entity that is managed by officially appointed Trustees, supported by an Administrator to aid deserving beneficiaries. Additionally, the Trust contributes to the socio-economic development needs within the parameters of deserving mining communities. The Trust is used to effect and implement Sibanye Still- Water’s purpose of “Improving Lives” thus making greater impact on the lives of all its stakeholders.

OBJECTIVES OF THE TRUST

The main goal of the SRMCDT is to develop the social, economic, educational, and developmental needs of Black Persons within the mine’s communities therefore, the Trust must ensure that 58% of the benefits of the SRMCDT go towards the improvement of the lives of Black Persons.

The SRMCDT’s responsibility is to get Community Trust shares and hold the shares as Trust assets which are for the benefit and moral welfare of the mine’s doorstep communities, including the formation of a platform for external investment through which the following areas of interest are supported financially:
1. Education-Provision of skills training and bursaries particularly for mining careers and associated industries.
2. Sustainable health and social development programmes for the community and its beneficiaries.
3. Rehabilitation of the natural environment of the community through cooperation with the Rustenburg Operations rehabilitation Programme.
4. Entrepreneurship in the community through skills programmes and empowerment projects.
5. Sustainable development programmes in the community.
6. Upliftment of vulnerable groups especially women, youth, and people with disabilities in the community.

FUNDING QUALIFYING CRITERIA

• The operating model policy clearly says that before funding can be considered for any individual or organisation, the Trust must follow the “Principle of Calling for Proposals”.
